Unit Leader (Seasonal)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Position works with the camp administration to coordinate and deliver unit program and camp activities. They are responsible for the supervision and care of a designated number of campers. Assists with the delivery of various programs within a unit and ensures the safety and well-being of the campers by organizing, planning, and administering unit activities following State Regulations, ACA Standards, Girl Scout Activity Checkpoints, and GSOFCT Volunteer Essentials with an emphasis on age-appropriate and session specific programs.

 

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Coordinates and delivers unit programs with overall emphasis on thematic activities; works cooperatively to enrich all camp and unit programs and assists with general camp operations.
  • Manages multiple priorities and unit schedules to ensure work is completed in a timely and productive manner.
  • Delegates unit responsibilities, establishes expectations and provides guidance, assists in developing staff schedules and time-off.
  • Follows and enforces Camp Staff Personnel Policies. 
  • Assists in conflict resolution and problem solving with staff as needed.
  • Participates in mandated pre-camp training and attends all scheduled advisory meetings.
  • Maintains health and safety standards for campers, unit staff and self, and ensures well-equipped first aid kit is maintained and available in the unit. 
  • Provides continuous communication with the Director of First Aid regarding the health status of campers and unit staff.
  • Reports accidents and files incident reports promptly.
  • Participates in all regular camp activities such as meals, flag ceremonies, all-camp activities, cookouts, opening and closing days and kapers.
  • Completes all required paperwork within the unit including attendance, reports, badge record sheets, daily activity reports, incident, and accident reports.
  • Keeps records and prepares written reports as requested.
  • Reports needed repairs of equipment and facilities to the administrative staff.
  • Participates in all regularly scheduled meetings and training to ensure open and positive communication.
  • Participates in opening and closing procedures of the camp season.
  • Maintains knowledge of emergency protocols with the ability to make immediate life saving decisions.
  • Keeps the Camp Director, and her/his designee, as well as unit staff, informed of activities, problems, and concerns on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintains professional camper/staff relationships throughout the camp season.
  • Performs assigned evening unit counselor responsibilities.
  • Instructs specialty programs as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • At least 21 years or older. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work with a diverse group of staff/campers (background/abilities) to encourage full participation in Girl Scouting.
  • Proven ability to multi-task as required.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., work in extreme environmental conditions and walk on uneven terrain.
  • The ideal candidate will possess experience in working with children that includes the ability to develop, organize and implement Girl Scout programs out-of-doors. Proven success in camping, leadership, organizational skills with strong communication skills is required. 

 

EDUCATION:

  • High school graduate or its equivalent
  • 1 year of higher education completed
  • Resident Advisor in a college setting preferred
  • Experience in supervising people in an out of doors setting

 

CERTIFICATIONS:

First Aid/CPR/AED certification along with medication administration certification, or willingness to obtain upon being hired.
