Copywriter
POSITION SUMMARY:
Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s (GSOFCT) Marketing and Communications team is vital to the organization’s success in delivering on its mission by enabling vibrant membership and revenue growth; stewarding brand reputation and relevancy; and building engaging relationships and loyalty among the organization’s key stakeholders, girls, parents, alumni, donors, volunteers, and the communities we serve.
Reporting to the Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, the Copywriter and Content Manager serves as the primary writer to support the organization’s marketing, communications, and development efforts. The position works closely with colleagues across the organization, including the executive team. You will be self-directed and adaptable, as well as creative. This position joins a dynamic Marketing Communications (MarCom) team of five full-time staff members. As the lead content writer for the organization, you are both knowledgeable of industry trends and best practices and able to successfully tailor copy to a variety of distinct audiences, including but not limited to: members, donors, volunteers, alumni, and community partners.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Overall: Develop and implement core messaging to advance GSOFCT's ability to serve our mission, including raising funds from individual donors.
- Effectively conceptualize and execute copy and content for fundraising email campaigns, direct mail appeals, copy for paid digital marketing campaigns, social media advertising, PR materials, newsletters, presentations, publications, speeches, website copy, and content.
- Conduct interviews, research, cross-department collaboration, and write and edit content for organizational projects.
- Write copy for and assist in creation of communication materials (eg, member /volunteers’ newsletter, annual report, one-pagers, toolkits, impact reports, flyers/brochures, website blogs)
- Outreach & Awareness campaigns for membership, product sales (cookies and treats & read programs), camp, program events.
- Act as a communications department liaison to the development team.
- Participate in GSOFCT activities. Represent GSOFCT at community meetings and partner events, attending when necessary to create content around/write about the events.
- Participate in organization-wide events and meetings and perform other duties as assigned.
Content Writing + Production
- Writes clear, concise, engaging editorial content and executes ideas across mediums, including video scripts, websites, newsletters, presentations, publications, speeches, campaigns, and events.
- Produces exciting taglines for campaigns, engaging captions for social media posts, landing pages, donor communications, email newsletters, and more.
- Assists with the development of press releases, talking points, frequently asked questions (FAQs), and other media resources as necessary.
- Utilizes GSUSA communications toolkits and adapts them for council use as relevant.
- Edits and proofreads materials.
- Works closely with translation vendors to ensure materials are available in multiple languages and messaging is culturally appropriate.
Fundraising
- Write supporter-centric, emotionally compelling fundraising copy that inspires generosity and empowers action across multiple mediums, including:
- Email campaigns
- Direct mail
- Web content
- Event promotion
- Using marketing analytics, tailor messaging to appeal to various donor segments.
- Develop, execute, and manage GSOFCT's year-round email marketing strategy and execute the direct mail strategy to reach our donors and increase giving.
- Execute punch organizational core messaging that allows staff, board members, and partners to be effective ambassadors of GSOFCT.
Organizational Responsibilities:
Brand Governance
- Ensure proper use of GSOFCT/GSUSA brand and verbal standards. Protects and promotes the Girl Scout brand values and brand voice.
- Contributes to the visibility and positive reputation of the Girl Scout brand; implements key elements of marketing strategies to ensure a consistent and cohesive message.
- Plays a significant role in maintaining the integrity of the organization's communications.
- Maintain the organization's standards by ensuring that all communications reflect the organization’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Assists with the management of the internal Brand Center and ensures all marketing and communications assets are current.
Team Participation/Contributions
- Participates in marketing and communications planning meetings to ensure that all desired specifications follow GSUSA brand positioning.
- Contribute to Marcomm Team Key Initiatives to build/develop GSOFCT capacity.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & skills:
- Exceptional writing skills and experience writing in a non-academic setting, including writing to support fundraising initiatives required.
- Experience writing for multiple channels and multiple audiences.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills required.
- Ability to synthesize information and create engaging content that highlights the mission of Girl Scouts.
- Exceptional project management/organizational skills required.
- Demonstrated ability to proof & edit copy.
- Demonstrated knowledge of social media, digital marketing, and web design/editing strongly preferred.
- Mission-driven with three or more years’ experience writing in nonprofit media or marketing.
- Demonstrated commitment to the values of Girl Scouting.

EDUCATION and/or WORK EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience in writing and proofreading content, including experience as a Copywriter or in a related role.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Advertising, Marketing, English, or related field preferred.
- Experience with fundraising/non-profit writing preferred.
- Experience in search engine optimization (SEO), social media advertising, and writing for websites and other online content preferred.
- Experience working in a Non-profit organization preferred, but not required.
- Written and verbal fluency in Spanish preferred, but not required.

- Valid Connecticut driver’s license.
- Must carry and show proof of liability coverage of personal vehicle.
- Physical ability to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects up to 20 lbs.
- Sit or stand for long periods of time during events.
- Active participation in Product Sales initiatives.
