Position Summary

The Day Camp Bus Monitor plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, supervision, and positive experience of campers during transportation to and from camp each day. Serving as the first and last point of contact for many families, the Bus Monitor represents the welcoming spirit and professionalism of Girl Scouts of Connecticut (GSofCT).  This position maintains order and safety on the bus, manages attendance and communication logs, and builds excitement for the camp day through songs, games, and positive engagement.

Essential Responsibilities

Camper Supervision & Safety

  • Supervise campers during all bus transportation periods, ensuring they remain seated and follow safety rules.
  • Conduct headcounts and attendance at each pickup and drop-off location using official bus rosters.
  • Verify authorized pickup individuals through photo ID and written permissions before releasing campers.
  • Monitor camper behavior to maintain a safe, calm, and friendly environment, address issues promptly and respectfully.
  • Ensure all campers are accounted for before the bus departs from any stop or the camp facility.
  • Assist younger campers with boarding, seating, and exiting the bus safely.
  • Maintain visibility and control while the bus is in motion — never sit behind the last row of campers.

Health, Safety, and Emergency Procedures

  • Review bus safety rules with campers every Monday and reinforce expectations throughout the week.
  • Follow all GSofCT, ACA, and State of Connecticut transportation safety standards.
  • Respond calmly and appropriately in the event of illness, injury, or emergency; call 911 if necessary and notify the Camp Office immediately.
  • Participate in emergency and evacuation drills as directed by the Camp Director.
  • Complete required accident or incident reports promptly.
  • Monitor bus cleanliness and report any safety or maintenance issues to the Camp Administrative Assistant or Camp Director.

Communication & Customer Service

  • Greet campers and families warmly at every stop, providing a positive first impression of camp.
  • Professionally communicate with parents and guardians; refer any concerns directly to the Camp Office.
  • Maintain the confidentiality and privacy of camper information.
  • Carry a fully charged cell phone, camp contact numbers, and the official bus monitor notebook at all times.
  • Report delays, absences, or transportation issues promptly to the Camp Administrative Assistant.

Program & Engagement

  • Foster a fun, inclusive bus environment through songs, games, and camp-related conversations.
  • Encourage camper participation and friendship-building to set a positive tone for the camp day.
  • Support bus routines that promote Girl Scout values of cooperation, kindness, and respect.

Recordkeeping & Logistics

  • Maintain accurate attendance sheets, bus logs, and notes regarding camper absences or late pickups.
  • Turn in completed bus books and documentation to the Camp Administrative Assistant daily.
  • Ensure new camper rosters are collected each session and reflect accurate route information.

Other Duties

  • Participate in pre-camp bus safety orientation and in-service training.
  • Attend staff meetings as requested.
  • Support overall camp operations and assist with arrival and dismissal routines as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Experience working with children preferred.
  • Strong communication, patience, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to model calm and positive leadership in high-energy settings.
  • Excellent attention to detail and reliability in following transportation safety procedures.
  • Current Adult & Child FA/CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Commitment to the Girl Scout Mission and to creating a safe, welcoming experience for all campers.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move safely on and off the bus throughout the day.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to safety hazards and behavioral cues.
  • Ability to maintain alertness and focus during morning and afternoon transportation shifts.
  • Ability to provide first aid and respond appropriately in emergencies.
