Sleep Away Camp Waterfront Director

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Responsible for the safety and delivery of all aquatics programs at Camp. They are responsible for guarding for recreational swims and for small watercraft use, as assigned as well as overseeing all operations of the waterfront.

 

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Participates in the daily implementation of the aquatics program. Works cooperatively with Camp Director to enrich all-camp and aquatic programs including swimming, boating, and rainy-day activities to facilitate general camp operations.
  • Develops, follows, and enforces all waterfront safety measures and emergency procedures to ensure all health, safety and program standards are followed at all times in compliance with state regulations, ACA Standards, Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints, and GSOFCT Policies.
  • Participates in all staff trainings; including in-service and required pre-camp skills trainings.
  • Follows Camp Staff Personnel Policies.
  • Assesses swimming skills of all campers and staff for classification, ensuring that every participant has been through a swim assessment.
  • Maintains health and safety standards for campers, staff, and self. Report accidents and files incident reports promptly with the Camp Director and/or their designee.
  • Responsible for the care and use of camp aquatics equipment as assigned.
  • Maintains and runs waterfront emergency drills including, but not limited to, other camp emergencies.
  • Participates in opening and closing procedures of the camp season.
  • Maintains professional camper/staff relationships at all times.
  • Monitors water quality as appropriate to the facility.  Keep records, reports, and maintenance requisitions as assigned.
  • Documents and offers weekly in-service training with the waterfront staff.
  • Works with the Program Director for scheduling of program at the waterfront including but not limited to special events, daily instruction and free swim, small craft, etc.
  • Maintains knowledge of emergency protocol with the ability to make immediate life saving decisions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • 2 years plus experience in a supervisory role waterfront staff on an open waterfront.
  • Ability to demonstrate his/her competency in both lifeguarding and swimming skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate with a diverse group of staff and campers (background/abilities) to encourage full participation in Girl Scouting.
  • The ideal candidate will possess experience which relates to job responsibilities including successful experience in camping, swimming, group leadership, and organizational skills and experience working with children. Ability to effectively communicate and work with a diverse group of staff/campers (background/abilities) to encourage full participation in Girl Scouting.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., work in extreme environmental conditions, walk on uneven terrain.

EDUCATION:

High School graduate or equivalent. 

  

CERTIFICATIONS:

Lifeguard certification with Waterfront Module required

Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED and First Aid certifications are required.

Water Safety Instructor preferred. 

Small craft preferred.
