Assistant Camp Director (Seasonal)

New Milford, CT

Position Summary:

 The Assistant Camp Director is responsible for assisting the Camp Director to operate and implement a safe, healthy, nurturing and high quality program for campers, staff and parents. This position works with the Camp Director and administration team to assist in supervision, training, coordination and administration of camp staff, daily camp operations and activities following State of Connecticut Office of Early Childhood, American Camping Association (ACA), Girl Scout Safety Activity Check Points(SAC), and GSOFCT policies. Assumes full responsibility of summer camp operations during the absence of the Camp Director.


Major Accountabilities:

  •  Performs assigned duties and delegated responsibilities by the Camp Director, for the overall administration and general camp operations following state, ACA and SACs, with an emphasis on age-appropriate and session specific programs.
  • In the absence of the Camp Director, the Assistant Director shall be familiar with all of the activities offered at the camp during the period of the camp license, and have immediate access to all records and facilities utilized for all activities offered during camping season.
  • In the absence of the Camp Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for the supervision of the campers at all times while the campers are at camp.
  • Oversees the day camp operations and works closely with the Program Director in planning and implementing camp program on a daily basis.
  • Coordinates unit leaders/counselors, camp activities and encourages girl-planning in unit program delivery. Ensures all staff are following and enforcing all rules as well as fulfilling all expectations and their assigned duties.
  • Evaluates all program staff, two times during the camp season.
  • Plans and provides for a positive camp atmosphere and high staff morale.
  • Develops routines and schedules for camp operation throughout the camp season as necessary for enrollment and/or staffing to ensure girl to adult ratio compliance, work periods and time-off.
  • Corrects and documents, as necessary, behavioral, physical situations that may/may not affect the emotional or physical safety of any person on GSOFCT camp property. Works with parents to develop Camper Care Plans when and where necessary and according to state regulations.
  • Maintains positive public relations with parents, visitors and the general public at all times.
  • Assists Camp Director in pre-camp preparations.
  • Works directly with program specialist staff to provide assistance and support in developing activities that will engage and stimulate campers of all ages.
  • Be visible and positive during all interaction with staff and campers, at all times.
  • Conducts staff meetings with unit counselors and specialists for sharing ideas and plans for unit programs.
  • Conducts supervisory conferences and performance evaluation for staff while clearly communicating performance expectations.
  • Maintains health and safety standards for campers, unit staff and administrative staff.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with the Director of First Aid regarding the health status of campers and camp staff.
  • Reports accidents and files incident reports promptly.
  • Participates in all regular camp activities such as meals, flag ceremonies, all-camp activities, cookouts, and kapers.
  • Keeps records and prepares written reports as requested.
  • Reports needed repairs of equipment and facilities to the Camp Director or designee.
  • Coordinates and facilitates regularly scheduled meetings and trainings to ensure open and positive communication.
  • Participates in opening and closing procedures of the camp season.
  • Assist the campers and staff in emergency situations.
  • Keeps the Camp Director, and unit staff informed of activities, problems and concerns on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintains professional camper/staff relationships.
  • Assures professional staff conduct is maintained (camper/staff relationships) throughout the camp season.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Activate camp emergency action plans when warranted, to include one practice drill.
  • Be calm, capable and adept when responding to emergencies and situations requiring activation of emergency action plans including application of first aid and/or CPR.
  • Supervises and leads unit counselors and specialists by delegating work assignments and mentoring staff in their performance.

 Skills and Competencies:

  • Must be at 25 years of age or older
  • Show the willingness to abide by the policies and practices of Girl Scouts of Connecticut.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Adult Child First Aid/CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain.
  • Possess experience which relates to job responsibilities including successful experience in outdoor programs, management of children and staff, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrates good judgment in anticipating and preventing accidents and possess the ability to make sound decisions in a crisis.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 8 weeks of supervisory experience in an organized youth setting, ie. previous summer camp, other youth organization, etc.
  • Commitment to the Girl Scout approach to outdoor education and experiential learning
  • Strong leadership abilities
  • Writes clearly, tactfully and effectively, demonstrating strong grammar and usage skills
  • Enthusiasm, energy, and a positive presence as a role model.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word and Outlook.

Physical Aspects of the Job:

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the site and facilities, and camper and staff behavior.
  • Ability to provide first aid and to assist campers and staff in an emergency with a clear and level head.
